‘Home insurance knowledge’ is still a good place to start
The best place to learn about home insurance is with an insurance agent, says Mark Cate, president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
He recommends talking to a homeowner’s insurance agent.
“They can help you get the most out of your insurance,” Cate says.
“It’s really important to get a good insurance agent.”
Cate has a list of recommended insurance agents.
The first thing to consider is their professional credentials, Cate adds.
“There are a lot of insurance agents that are very good, but they aren’t necessarily professionals,” he says.
The National Association for Insurance Commissioners has a website that can help guide you through the process of selecting a good agent.
Insurance agents can help get you a better understanding of your home insurance coverage.
Cate also suggests that you find out how much coverage your policy has, whether you have an auto policy, or whether you are covered by homeowners insurance.
He says a homeowner might be able to get some answers about their homeowner’s policy by visiting the company’s website, but not necessarily the agent’s home office.
A homeowner who has been denied a claim may not know exactly what happened.
Cates recommends contacting the insurance company directly.
He also recommends that you ask about the policy’s exclusions.
If you can, look for what’s called a “non-excluded deductible,” or NDI, in the policy.
NDI is how much your home insurer covers for the deductible if you are injured or killed by the homeowner’s negligence.
You’ll also want to look at the policy limits, says Cate.
“If you are only insured for $250,000 or less, then you may be able get away with less,” he notes.
“But if you have a policy that has $1 million or more in coverage, then the limit will be $2 million.”
The good news is, home insurance policies generally don’t have exclusions for certain categories of homeowners, such as renters, homeowners with children, or those with disabilities, according to the National Assn.
of Insurance Administrators.
The NIAA says that homeowners can get coverage for all of these categories.
But if you don’t qualify for the same coverage you get with your auto or homeowner’s policies, you can get a better price by using a qualified health insurance agent or an insurer that has a good experience with the type of home insurance that you need.
For example, a home insurance agent might be a good choice if you can find an agent that has good experience in home insurance.
CATE says that if you live in an area that doesn’t have a lot or a lot for home insurance, it may be a bad idea to use a home agent, as there is often an element of risk associated with that type of insurance.
But Cate cautions that there are some good reasons to take an insurance broker with you to your home.
“You need to be able speak with the broker to understand the situation,” Cates says.
If your home has an accident or fire that could put you or your family at risk, it could be a better idea to hire a professional instead.
“I think it’s more of a good idea to just get a lawyer to handle it,” Cice says.
Insurance broker’s experience can be important if you’re considering buying a home, Cates adds.
Some home insurance agents may have insurance that is more stringent than the policies that you’ll receive from your insurer.
“In my experience, there’s no need to buy a home with a policy like that,” Cites says.
Cite also recommends getting a homeowner to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which is a legal document that requires you to keep quiet about any issues that could affect your home and your family.
“Insurance agents are a good way to get people who are dealing with a homeowner who is going to have a big problem, who is in a high-risk situation,” he adds.
CITE recommends that if the homeowner is going through a divorce, the divorce is likely going to affect the homeowners insurance coverage, but Cate notes that if there is a separation and the family moves, there is more of an issue.
“As far as the homeowner, there may be more risk if you or the family move,” Cite says.
But the real issue is that the insurance companies are not required to tell you that, he adds, “so you might be paying a premium that is higher than what you should.”
CATE also recommends taking time to talk to the homeowner about the homeowners policy before you go in and pick it up.
“The homeowners insurance policy has a certain period of time after the homeowner has bought the home to come and inspect the policy,” CATE explains.
“And so if you decide to get the policy, it needs to be inspected and approved by the insurance agent before you can go in to pick it.”
